LOMBOK
’S KING STATISTIC AND THE VOLCANO
Once, the King of Lombok whispered by the Great Spirit to climb the Rinjani Volcano to find the ways for the prosperity of the kingdom. Being accompanied by thousands of peoples, he commenced the holly trip along the trails through the thick forests rich in flora and fauna. Thousands of paces before the summit, the King accompanied by two boys started to ascend. Once in the peak, they felt asleep after enjoying the stunning views of the crater lake in the cold mountain breeze. Whilst remained sleeping, the King had been whispered by the Great Spirit, that Lombok would be attacked by epidemic illnesses that could only be cured by Keris** which had to be made of the needles collected from every village in Lombok along the number of its population.
The King and his two young followers woke up, and returned to the crowd where he announced the plea of the Great Spirit. Since then, every village in
Lombok
collected the needles, and submitted to the King. The King made a note on the total of needles and marked as the name of the village. All the needles had been made into twelve Keris and kept in the King’s palace. One Keris had to send to every village whenever an epidemic illness attacked.
When the harvest season came, and every village paid the crop tax to the King, but the tax did not match the total of needles, so it had encouraged the King to remind the Village Master on the total of needle he had submitted and to renounce the message of the Great Spirit. Everybody were afraid of epidemic attacks that might happen to his village if they did not pay the crop tax to the King.
Finally the King had received an enormous crop tax as he had expected, that made the King of Lombok as the richest King among the Malay Kings and Sultans who were visited by Sir. Alfred Russels Wallace in his expedition. In the 2nd Lombok War in 1894, it was found 3 765 kg of jewelry made of gold, diamond and precious stones in the 16 ha of the fired King’s Palace in Cakranegara Lombok, the former capital city of the Kingdom since the beginning of the 18th century.
So… follow the traces of
Lombok
’s King centuries ago for pleasant thrills and the soul prosperity.
